History of the Lake Sunapee Region

The Lake Sunapee region is steeped in rich history, dating back thousands of years to when glaciers carved out the landscape we enjoy today. The Algonquin Native Americans were the first to name this beautiful body of water "Soo-Nipi," or "Goose Lake," due to the geese that migrated across its clear waters. In the late 1800s, with the arrival of the Boston-Maine Railroad, Lake Sunapee became a premier vacation destination, attracting visitors with its pristine beauty and fresh mountain air. Historic steamboats once ferried tourists across the lake, and remnants of this era can still be experienced today aboard the MV Kearsarge and MV Mount Sunapee, which offer scenic cruises throughout the summer.

Mount Sunapee also boasts a storied past, with its origins as a state park beginning in the early 20th century when local residents and conservationists banded together to preserve the mountain's natural beauty. Today, the region’s historic charm is reflected in its well-preserved villages, classic New England architecture, and numerous cultural landmarks, such as The Fells Historic Estate & Gardens and the New London Historical Society.
